Emetics are a group of substance that is used to induce vomiting artificially when over dose of food is taken. They are sold under brand name products like “Syrup of Ipecac”. Emetics are frequently used to eliminate poisonous toxins from body during emergency situation. They are either taken orally or through injection.
People suffering from eating disorder
Emetics are frequently used by people suffering from eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, and bulimia which is very common among teens. Commonly they try to vomit in order to eliminate unwanted calories which are responsible for fattiness. Anorexia is characterized by the obsessive desire to become thin. Abusing of emetics among people suffering from the above two disorders have become common today which leads to addiction to emetics.
Action in our body
The emetics stimulate vomiting by stimulating the nerve endings present in large intestine that induce muscle contraction. Due to contraction of muscles the ingested food is thrown out from the GI tract. Also the nerve endings simulate the large intestine to excrete water and other necessary electrolytes that it has already absorbed and these things come outside while vomiting causing severe lose of electrolytes and water.
Side effects
Before the occurrence of vomiting about 2/3 of the ingested food has already been absorbed and begun digestion by the small intestine. Hence it has a very little use to vomit with an ambition of expelling the extra calorie.
Followings are the side effects after consumption of emetics:
-While emesis, acids come out of stomach making severe destruction to enamel of teeth.
-Perforations occur in inner lining of esophagus due to the action of acids.
-Electrolyte imbalance occurs in body fluid causing heart problems, muscle weakness and muscle pain.
-Dehydration may occur due to lose of excessive water.
Precautions
It must be noted that emetics have no such active rule in losing calories as maximum calories have already been absorbed before vomiting. People taking emetics to remove toxic substances may suffer from the above mentioned side effects.
