Librium is the brand name of the chemical Chlordiazepoxide which is a benzodiazepine derivative.It is a white crystalline substance, soluble in water and having sedative or hypnotic effect.
Clinical use
Due to its sedative action it is used to treat anxiety. Currently it is also used to treat the symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome and anxiety before surgery.

Common side effects and symptoms of the medication of the drug include confusion, drowsiness, constipation, liver problems, fainting, lack of muscle coordination, minor irregularity in menstrual cycle, swelling due to fluid ret
Precautions
People under medication of Librium are advised not to operate any risky machinery tools as it often causes the feeling of decreasing alertness, coordination and experience of drowsiness. Pregnant or breast feeding women should take Librium under the consultation of a doctor otherwise it may result to be fatal.
Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited during the medication of Librium as they increase the drowsiness and dizziness resulting in low blood pressure and respiration rate.
Also people under medication of certain drugs like cimetidine, disulphiram, sleeping pills, seizure medication, depression medication, barbiturates, sedatives, antihistamines are advised to consult doctor before medication of the drug. Smoking is not allowed during the medication as it retards its effectiveness.
Abuse of Librium and overdose
Due to the sedative or hypnotic activity of Librium it is often abused by people to reduce tension and anxiety. Also long time use of the drug by people with a history of drug abuse can lead to addiction. People consuming over dose of Librium may experience the following complications:
-Sudden decrease in heart rate and blood pressure resulting hypotension.
-Hypoventilation due to decrease in respiration rate.
-Impaired motor function resulting blurred vision, imbalance, muscle weakness and impaired reflexes
-Coma
The antidote for the overdose of the drug is flumazenil.
